Everything's Gone Green

how quickly the green
has spread itself out
since that first heavy
mid-December storm

the island now emerald
in the sunshine while
a kettle of returning swallows
swoop, drawing circles in the sky

how grateful we are
bearing witness to
new life and growth
in this early springtime

from deep within
the ochre and the sand
it burst out - cascading
down the volcanoes

like verdant lava
in chartreuse and lime
and seafoam
in this fresh morning sun

the kelly leaves glitter
beneath the copper-blue sky
the sand-brown linnets
chuckle in the campos

how mild the spring comes in
the gorse lifts golden blossom skyward -
how lovely the mint shoots
on the euphorbia

and here a beetle runs
and there a fly
rests on the fennel leaf
in bottle-green

how sweet is spring
as Lanzarote turns green
