The fig trees on the Mozaga lava fields grow either in zocos or in collapsed lava tunnels. At the moment they are full of sweet, ripe fruit. We've been picking them this week.
In Bristol, I tried to grow fig trees twice - once in our garden and once at the allotment in St Werburghs. Everybody told me that the Brown Turkey variety was really easy to grow, but despite all my loving care and attention, both fig trees died quite quickly. Ironically, the fig trees in Mozaga are mostly ignored, unloved and never watered, yet they seem to really thrive here.
We've been eating them straight from the trees, sweet and still sun-warm. Teardrop shaped, they are remarkably soft and fragile. We've even seen some split open whilst still on the tree, showing their juicy goodness, or having dropped to the ground, still ready to be eaten.
There are so many fig fruits at the moment that I'm going to look at how best to preserve them. I think I can sun-dry them quite easily.
