El Golfo

risen from deep inside the Earth
weathered lava cliffs
half-drowned volcano cone
revealing bold bands of igneous rock

the striated wall of the crater
basaltic lava and crumbling tephra
myriad of sienna and russet
garnet, sangria, umber

smoothed and eroded
through the centuries
into the current fantastic form
by the forces of nature

sea, wind, gravity, time
the steep slopes of El Golfo
where at the foot of the crater wall
rests El Charco Verde

half-moon and striking
swampy, acidic-green-watered lagoon
volcanic soup of minerals and micro-organisms
unique to this particular lago

then to the beach of dusty, black, volcanic pebble
sprinkled with semi-precious olivine
the large finger of rock sitting just off the beach
forcing the ocean to crash and bubble around it

bright with white patches of sea-salt
formed through evaporation
nestling warmly in small rock pools
lime-green marine algae tightly cling

sectacular El Golfo, from the cliffs
to the lagoon, over the beach
and out to the crystal clear waters
of the wild Atlantic Ocean

natural stage, unfolding drama -
few places on our planet
offer such beautiful contrast
as this
