La Noché de San Juan is the eve of the Feast Day of Saint John the Baptist.
Across Spain, this traditional midsummer party always takes place at sunset on the evening of June 23; bonfires are lit and firework displays often take place.
In those gardens beyond,
how they blazed that night,
and the warm Sahara wind,
encouraging the wood fire.
The smell of embers scoring night air.
We walked around the village to watch,
and over to The Monument,
along the busy road.
Golden sunset blended with golden flame,
and the flames taking hold,
blow-torching the land,
across the valley and over to Teguise.
This night unlike others,
this special night of fire:
beacons that beckon the summer.
